A national mourning of seven days was decreed by the president of the transition in Chad, the general Mahamat Idriss Deby, in memory of about fifty of the people killed Thursday October 20 during the demonstrations against the extension of the duration of the transition of 24 months.
“We will bury our dead in pain but with dignity. We must care for our wounded in solidarity. A 7-day mourning will be observed throughout the national territory from Tuesday, October 25, 2022 in memory of our compatriots who died during these tragic and regrettable events, “said the Chadian President during a speech Monday in the evening.
At the call of the opposition and civil society, Chad experienced one of the deadliest days of demonstrations in the country last Thursday, with a heavy toll of more than 50 dead and at least 300 injured, according to the government.
The demonstrators contested the two-year extension of the political transition period and the retention in power of Mahamat Idriss Deby, son of the former President.
“These are not simple demonstrations but a real insurrection”, affirmed, Monday, the president of Chad, adding that “what happened testifies to the manifest will to start a civil war”.
According to President Deby, the organizers of these demonstrations “recruited and used terrorist and paramilitary groups to carry out wanton mass murders” in Chad.
The Chadian president noted that the opponent Succes Masra, leader of the Les Transformateurs party and one of the organizers of the Thursday demonstrations had demanded the prime minister’s office in the government of national unity formed last week.
“If I had acceded to this request, there would be neither demonstration nor all this violence. How can a political actor who has argued that the Dialogue was only a monologue, that the resolutions and recommendations have no meaning for him, can he assume the coordination of the action of a Government whose primary mission is the strict application of the specifications of the Inclusive and Sovereign National Dialogue? exclaimed President Deby.
