After the bitter failure of Iliad, Xavier Niel places his pawns by entering the capital of telecom giant Vodafone

The founder of Free seizes 2.5% of the British telecommunications group Vodafone via one of its investment vehicles, Atlas Investment.

After Italy and Poland with Iliad or Ireland and Switzerland via his Holding NJJ but also in Senegal or Monaco, Xavier Niel continues his conquest in telecoms abroad. Atlas Investment, an investment vehicle belonging to it, announces today that it has acquired a stake of around 2.5% in the Vodafone group, i.e. a transaction at around 850 million euros based on the market valuation of this telecom juggernaut (30 billion euros).

In a press release, Xavier Niel’s holding company indicates that it has identified “Vodafone as an attractive investment opportunity, given the quality of its asset portfolio and the strong underlying trends in the global telecommunications sector.”

This entry into the capital is reminiscent of Vodafone’s refusal to sell its activities in Italy to Iliad at the beginning of the year, the group then turned its back on a 100% cash offer amounting to 11.25 billion euros. If it is still too early to know what ideas Xavier Niel has behind his head, a possibility naturally emerges, that of being able to influence strategic decisions by Vodafone on its subsidiaries abroad, including in Italy.

Moreover, Atlas Investment makes no secret of it by supporting “Vodafone’s publicly stated intention to pursue consolidation opportunities in selected geographies, as well as its infrastructure separation efforts”.

The subsidiary of NJJ Holding also believes that there is “opportunities to accelerate both the rationalization of Vodafone’s footprint and the separation of its infrastructure assets, to further reduce costs, improve profitability, accelerate the development of broadband in Germany and in other regions and to focus more on innovation”. As if the challenge was double.
