Apple iPad Pro 12.9 (2022) review: power to spare

Apple keeps the design of its iPad Pro 12.9 launched in 2021, but not only. The photo block located on the back of the tablet is identical. It therefore includes a 12-megapixel sensor associated with a wide-angle (f / 1.8), but also an ultra wide-angle (f / 2.4) with its 10-megapixel sensor.

Main module: 12 megapixels, f/1.8

The iPad Pro 12.9 (2022) makes it simple, with its definition limited to 12 megapixels. The sharpness is therefore logically less good than that of the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra, which is a little better defined, but we notice both a fairer colorimetry and a slightly more natural treatment. We appreciate the high level of detail even at the periphery of the image, a sign of good quality optics.

At night, on the other hand, the iPad Pro 12.9 (2022) is struggling. The image is extremely noisy and the colors are desaturated. Even if the Samsung tablet does not really manage to restore more details, it has the merit of offering a more satisfactory exposure and a rendering that is certainly smoother, but more pleasing to the eye.

Ultra-wide-angle module: 10 megapixels, f/2.4

Few tablets offer a second photo module, and even more with such definition. This 10-megapixel sensor is identical to that of last year’s 12.9 iPad Pro, and produces comparable results. However, we notice a slightly warmer colorimetry and slightly more details.

iPad Pro 12.9 (2022) (10MP, f/2.4, ISO 40, 1/99 sec)

On the other hand, at night, it is the status quo. The noise is just as present as last year, despite a slightly more satisfactory exposure. The pictures are not usable.

Front module, portrait and video mode

The iPad Pro 12.9 (2022) retains the 12-megapixel front photo module (f / 1.8 optics) of its predecessor. Good news that allows you to take good quality shots – for those who are not discouraged by the weight and dimensions of the machine. We note that this module is always on the left edge of the tablet when it is held in landscape orientation, which seems a shame for those who use this iPad with a keyboard in the context of video meetings, for example.

Finally, the iPad Pro 12.9 can shoot up to 4K at 60 frames per second, but also in ProRes up to 4K at 30 fps (only from the 256 GB version of the tablet), this which was lacking in the previous generation of Apple. It is up to the user to determine if it is useful to him…
