Argentina 2nd in the FIFA rankings after their title, behind Brazil

Argentina, world champion in Qatar, rose to second place in the FIFA rankings, behind Brazil, still first, and ahead of France, finalist, according to the official ranking published Thursday by the international body.

Lionel Messi’s partners gain a place in the rankings, like those of Kylian MbappĂ©, fourth in the world before the competition in Qatar.

The two finalist nations pass in front of Belgium, eliminated in the group stage. Brazil, out of the quarter-finals, still maintains the first rank it has held since March 31.

The first three in the standings are within twenty points, and are widening the gap with the Belgians, fourth.

The scenario of the final, won on penalties by the Albiceleste (3-3 ap, 4-2 pens), was not favorable to the two teams: if one of them had won before the end of extra time, they would have taken the lead in the Fifa rankings on Thursday, as more points are awarded for the winners before the penalty shootout.

The best rise in the world top 10 is to the credit of Croatia, which rose from 12th to 7th place after its third place in Qatar.

Surprise of the tournament, Morocco gains eleven places and ranks 11th, as the first African nation.

Beaten by Australia in the group stage, Denmark made the worst operation in the top 20, with eight places lost (18th).

Sometimes criticized for its method of calculation, the Fifa ranking is used to define the seeds of major competitions. Germany, 12th before the draw for the World Cup in Qatar, had for example been returned to the N.2 hat and could not avoid Spain in the pool.
