American biker Mason Klein crossed the finish line first on Monday and won the second stage of the Dakar 2023 despite a penalty, after 430 kilometers of a long special between the shores of the Red Sea and the outskirts of Al-Ula .
Behind the KTM rider, Sébastien Bühler (GER / Hero) took second place in the day’s race, with a gap of 1 minute and 9 seconds, followed by Skyler Howes (USA / Husqvarna) 1 minute and 13 seconds behind. Klein, according to provisional results which may still evolve depending in particular on possible penalties.
The Australian Daniel Sanders (GasGas), who led the debates for a time, finally stalled and finished ninth at 3 minutes 24 seconds from the first while the American Ricky Brabec (Honda), winner of the first stage, arrived 15th of the day’s stage with a delay of 8 minutes and 19 seconds.
Klein therefore takes first place in the general classification, with a lead of 1 minute 41 seconds ahead of Toby Price (AUS / KTM) and 2 minutes 3 seconds over the Spaniard Joan Barreda (Honda) who received a penalty of one minute. The second stage, 589 km including 430 km of special, is the first of a series of three consecutive with more than 400 km of special. On Tuesday, the competitors will head northeast towards Ha’il.
