As is often the case in the United States, one mass shooting follows another. This time, it was in San Mateo County, south of San Francisco, that death struck again. A 67-year-old man is currently in custody after giving himself up. He allegedly killed seven of his fellow farm workers at two nearby farms, authorities said.
This new tragic event follows very closely that which intervened in the Asian-majority city of Monterey Park, near Los Angeles, and whose death toll was raised to eleven after the death of a person from his injuries.
A regular at the dance hall
We now know a little more about the first killer. He is a 72-year-old Asian man himself, who committed suicide when the police were preparing to arrest him. According to reports, he was a regular at the dance hall where he banged on the occasion of a party celebrating the Lunar New Year. It was there that he had met his ex-wife. Police are investigating possible jealousy or personal motives but nothing has been confirmed yet.
The age of the killer is quite unusual in these kinds of circumstances. His victims are also elderly. None are under 50 years old. It was by visiting them that the governor of California, Gavin Newsom, one of the strictest states in the country in terms of possession of weapons, was informed of the second killing.
“I’m in the hospital meeting victims of a mass shooting when I’m pulled away to report another shooting. This time in Half Moon Bay. Tragedy after tragedy,” the Democrat tweeted.
