Chinese ambassador summoned following UN report on situation of Uyghurs

AA / Geneva

The Swiss Foreign Ministry on Thursday summoned the Chinese ambassador to the country to express its concerns about the human rights situation in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region.

This is what emerges from the statement issued by the ministry following the report of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, published last August, on the situation in Xinjiang.

The statement referred to the report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on violations committed in Xinjiang, stressing that the practices of “arbitrary and discriminatory detention” in the region, mentioned in the report, are alarming.

“Switzerland believes that the best way to ensure respect for the most basic human rights is through constructive dialogue with the Beijing authorities,” the statement said.

In its report, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights considered that certain measures taken against the Muslim Uyghur minority in Xinjiang amount to “crimes against humanity”.

The UN High Commissioner says it has documented “credible incidents of torture or ill-treatment of detainees” in Xinjiang.

He pointed to China’s repressive and discriminatory practices in Xinjiang, saying many people have been separated from their families due to arrests, sentencing to forced labor in re-education camps, or had to leave their country to escape. to repression.

The report called on the Chinese government to immediately release those arbitrarily detained in re-education camps, prisons and similar centers for the deprivation of liberty, and to review laws relating to counter-terrorism, national security and minority rights.

In August 2018, a group of UN human rights experts reported that China was detaining around one million Uyghur Muslims in secret camps in East Turkestan.

Beijing has controlled Eastern Turkestan, where the Muslim Uyghur minority lives, since 1949 and has baptized the region Xinjiang, synonymous with “new frontier”.
