An Italian tourist died on Tuesday after being hit during the 9th stage of the Dakar rally between Riyadh and Harad, Saudi Arabia, organizers said.
“A spectator of Italian origin who was behind a dune was injured on the rally track“Said Amaury Sport Organization in a press release. The victim, evacuated by helicopter by medical assistance, died during his transfer, specifies ASO.
The person was hit by a competitor and investigations are underway to determine the circumstances of the tragedy, ASO said without further details.
The Dakar rally started on December 31 from the shores of the Red Sea for more than 8000 km of racing and an arrival on January 15 on the east coast in Dammam.
Based in Saudi Arabia for the fourth edition in a row, the rally-raid takes place mainly in desert areas but nevertheless attracts spectators, in proportions however much less than when the race was held in Latin America.
