BERLIN, Oct 30 (Reuters) – Germany and the European Union are considering classifying Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organization, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said on Sunday.
“I said clearly last week that we were going to launch a new sanctions package, that we were going to study how we can also register the Revolutionary Guards among terrorist organizations,” she said in an interview with the ARD television channel.
On Saturday, the commander-in-chief of the Revolutionary Guards described the day as “the last day of the riots” by summoning the population to no longer demonstrate, which could reflect the authorities’ desire to further tighten repression.
However, students demonstrated again on Sunday in several Iranian universities.
Annalena Baerbock also declared that no negotiations were underway between Iran and Western countries on Tehran’s nuclear program.
