After the announcement of his retirement on social networks Thursday, November 3, Gerard Pique created the surprise. In a video, the Spanish defender explained that he will leave FC Barcelona this winter. A declaration that had the effect of a bomb while the player is on the Spain’s pre-list to play in the FIFA World Cup in Qatar (November 20 to December 18) and that his retirement was not expected until next summer.

According to Sport, Barça would be in negotiations for several months to recruit Íñigo Martínez. The Spanish club would have even wanted to sign the contract of its new recruit last summer, but the current club of the latter, Athletic Bilbao, would have opposed it while waiting to agree on a transfer price. The Basque defender, at the end of his contract in Bilbao, has the possibility of signing for the club of his choice from 1er January, for a signature effective on 1er July.

In his career, Martínez has known only one other club, Real Sociedad, where he was trained until 2018. If he has never played in a match in the final phase of the World Cup or Euro, he has so far 19 selections with Spain since 2013.
