For the network operator, Elia, no need for additional power plants for winter 2026-2027

No additional power plant will be built for the winter of 2026-2027, according to this year’s auctions, during which a total capacity of 1.2 GW was offered. No capacity has been contracted, indeed indicated the high voltage operator Elia, which organizes these auctions. The Creg, the electricity and gas regulator, checked and validated these results.

The two new gas-fired power plants will indeed already be operational during the winter in question and battery projects will be implemented to store the electricity. The government further asserts that the nuclear power plants of Doel 4 and Tihange 3 will also supply electricity normally during the winter of 2026-2027. However, the government is still negotiating for the moment with the operator Engie to extend these two reactors.

Elia also ensures that the existing capacity is sufficient to meet demand. It will be auctioned a year in advance. “No capacity was ultimately contracted because the demand curve was completely covered by the extension of two nuclear reactors, by the volume contracted during the previous auction and by the existing capacity which does not yet wish to participate.“, specified the manager of the high voltage network.
