Lexus RX 450h+, an ode to refinement

TEST – The plug-in hybrid engine is perfectly suited to the fifth generation of the large SUV from the Japanese luxury brand, which emphasizes on-board pleasure.

Rounded corners, widened tracks, a long hood, a roof that seems to float, large 21-inch wheels, a wheelbase extended by 60 mm for an unchanged length: the last Lexus RX seems transfigured. This is even more true inside where the assembly and the quality of the materials seem to be a matter of maniacal care. The designers have obviously heard the complaints: the ergonomics have been completely redesigned compared to the previous version, inheriting the dashboard from the NX. A button on the steering wheel allows you to scroll through the menus of the main functions on the instrument panel and the head-up display without taking your eyes off the road and your hands from the steering wheel. The large-format multimedia screen can be handled with your fingertips, but its layout frees up a nest of dust on the board.

The RX consumes less than its rivals

The new RX also inherits the plug-in hybrid technology from the recent NX. It combines the 2.5-liter 4-cylinder Atkinson cycle with 2 electric motors, 184 hp at the front and 54 hp at the rear, and an 18.1 kWh lithium-ion battery. This RX announces a range of 66 km, realistic if we favor urban and peri-urban routes. This ensures a consumption approved at 1.1 l / 100 km and therefore an advantageous tax. Empty battery, the RX consumes less than its rivals thanks to better management of the hybrid system. We recorded 7.5 liters per 100 km on a varied route using the highway.

In anticipation of crossing a built-up area, the 4-cylinder can also be used to charge the battery. It recharges in 2h30 on a Wallbox. Despite a more dynamic behavior than its predecessor, the RX continues to favor comfort, at the cost of insufficiently controlled damping.
