The Senegalese president, who is also the current chairman of the African Union (AU), Macky Sall, strongly condemned the burning of a copy of the Koran by a Swedish right-wing extremist in Stockholm on Saturday.

“I very strongly condemn the heinous act of the Swedish right-wing extremist Rasmus Paludan who burned a copy of the Holy Quran,” reacted on Twitter Sall.

“Islamophobia and hatred of Muslims are abominable and must be fought without concession”, he continued in denouncing this act which took place near the Türkiye embassy in Stockhom where a police cordon was set up to protect Paludan.

Many Muslim countries have expressed outrage at this heinous act.

“Algeria expresses its firm condemnation of this heinous act which incites the provocation of Muslims, and which offends the values of freedom on which nations are based”, lamented Algiers through a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and of the National Community abroad.

Morocco, for its part, expressed its “categorical rejection of this dangerous act” by means of a press release from its ministry in charge of Foreign Affairs.

“This heinous act, which offends the feelings of more than a billion Muslims, is capable of stirring up anger and hatred between religions and peoples,” Rabat explained.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson on Sunday denounced a “deeply disrespectful act”.

“Freedom of expression is a fundamental part of democracy. But what’s legal isn’t necessarily appropriate,” Tory leader Kristersson said on Twitter in a post overnight.

“Burning books that are holy to many is a deeply disrespectful act. I want to express my sympathy to all Muslims who have been offended by what happened in Stockholm”, had first reacted the Swedish PM after the burning.

In a statement released on Saturday, Ankara recalled that despite all the warnings issued by the Türkiye, the Swedish authorities did not cancel the authorization given to a leader of a far-right party to attack the Holy Quran .

Paludan, Danish leader of the far-right Stram Kurs (Hard Line) party, had carried out the same package in April 2022 in southern Linkoping, according to the media.
