Netgear EX6470 review, the last stand of wifi repeaters 5

To evaluate the performance of the Netgear repeater, we repeated the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz signals from a Netgear RAX200 router to which we connected a laptop PC via an adapter to the 2.5 Gb/s jack. In order to measure the speeds, we transferred a 4.73 GB file (a disk image) from the first laptop PC to a second equipped with an Intel AX210 wifi 6 chip, but also to a fixed desktop PC located at the floor and connected with a PCIe Gigabyte GC-WBAX200 card. This also has the Intel AX210 chip, but with an external antenna.

The router is positioned at an angle of the housing, the repeater is plugged into a socket 15 cm from the ground, almost in the middle of the latter. We perform a first measurement with the repeater near the router (point 1), a second at 1 m from the repeater placed in the middle of the dwelling (point 2), a third in a room about 5 m from the repeater with a load-bearing wall at opposite the router (point 3), a fourth on the fixed PC upstairs through a concrete floor (point 4), and the last one upstairs too, but above the first bedroom where the Router speeds are the lowest (point 5).

Connected to the 5 GHz band, the EX6470 offers constant speeds of around 300 Mb/s for downloading and 250 Mb/s for uploading on our first four measurement points. Point 5 reaches the limit of coverage of the repeater and the speeds are considerably reduced, barely 100 Mb/s in download and 132 Mb/s in upload.

The 2.4 GHz frequency band allows for greater coverage, with our measurement point n°5 offering speeds close to those recorded for the others. On average, we get 150 Mb/s in download and more or less 100 Mb/s in upload. If the flow rates are not staggering, we nevertheless appreciate the stability offered throughout the accommodation.

Against the competition, the EX6470 shows slightly lower performance than the TP-Link RE605Xwhich is equipped with wifi 6, but sold around twenty euros more expensive.
