The north of Togo was hit a few days ago by a new large-scale terrorist attack, according to several local and international media.

The attack hit the locality of Tiwoli, near the border with Burkina Faso, from where, since November 2021, terrorists (elements of JNIM, the Support Group for Islam and Muslims, which is raging in the area) come to carry out attacks in the northern part and leave to take refuge there.

On Thursday, November 24, 2022, the Togolese armed forces, according to information relayed by local media, as well as on social networks and which have not been denied, fell into a large ambush, set up by terrorists who came to large number in this locality of Tiwoli.

But the forces of Operation Koundjouare (launched since 2018 to secure the area) “responded strongly. This was followed by very heavy exchanges of fire which made it possible to repel the attackers”.

“The search is still ongoing. We will communicate when it is finished”, assured a Togolese army officer joined by the Anadolu Agency this Monday, November 28, 2022.

According to several media, this violent attack caused deaths and injuries. Several figures circulate.

But the Togolese army officer joined by the Anadolu Agency does not give any assessment, not even a provisional one, of this attack.

“The elements of the balance sheet will be provided in the official communication,” he said.

Since November 2021, the northern part of Togo, the prefecture of Kpendjal, not far from the border with Burkina Faso, has been the scene of several deadly attacks.

Last July, there were four attacks on which the Togolese authorities officially communicated. At this time, Togo has chosen not to communicate a precise assessment of the attacks.

So no figures were mentioned. The Togolese army has just confirmed on Saturday July 16, 2022 that simultaneous attacks took place in several villages in the Kpendjal prefecture.

These attacks took place on the night of Thursday July 14 to Friday July 15 and caused “several deaths” and “some injuries” according to an official press release.
