October 2022 update is available

As promised, Microsoft did release a new version of Windows 10 at the end of October. Stamped 22H2, this very discreet update is however content with minor improvements without bringing any new function…

Along with the release of Windows 11 22H2 (see our article), Microsoft has indeed released a new version of Windows 10, also stamped 22H2 – 22 for the year, H2 for the second half. But without fanfare. It is indeed in the greatest discretion that the publisher began to circulate this update, on October 18, 2022, a few days after the Patch Tuesday of October, the traditional set of software “band-aids” that Microsoft releases on the second Tuesday of each month for all its products to close security holes or fix bugs. A discretion which is explained by the fact that this new “big” version – the only one of the year – does not include any significant novelty. Which does not prevent you from installing it if you are still under Windows 10 – like most PC users today – if only to take advantage of small invisible improvements… Especially since, like the previous ones, this update is free!

What’s new in Windows 10 22H2?

As the 21H2 version released in November 2021, Windows 10 22H2 is therefore officially an important update. However, even if it is presented as a new “complete” version, with its name and its vintage, it does not bring any major novelty. And for good reason: on the one hand, Microsoft now focuses on Windows 11, reserving its new functions and applications for this still young system; on the other, Windows 10, which was released in 2015 anyway, will in principle be discontinued in October 2025, probably when Windows 12 appears. The Redmond firm, which bets everything on Windows 11 currently seeking to accelerate its adoption, therefore has no reason to enrich its “old” operating system, even if it is used much more than the new one. Windows 10 22H2 is therefore simply a “maintenance” version.

Curiously, Microsoft gave no details about the content of this version, not even on the support site pages, contenting itself with mentioning security improvements, proof that we should not expect a revolution, but minor… Anyway, it will officially be the only – and the best – version of Windows usable on PCs incompatible with Windows 11, even if there is tips for switching to the new system.

As with all Windows updates, it is best to go through Windows Update to install Windows 10 22H2.

► To do this, open the Windows Settings with the keyboard shortcut Windows + Ithen click Windows Update in the menu on the left of the window. In principle, Windows Udapte then automatically checks for the availability of updates by signaling the arrival of new ones. If not, just click the button Check for updates and wait – depending on the speed of your internet connection.

► If the message Feature update to Windows 10, version 22H2 appears, your PC is ready to receive the new version. Then click on the link Download and install.

► Wait while downloading. When the operation is finished, click on the button To restart who has appeared. Wait again while the PC restarts and the update installs. Installation only takes a few seconds if the computer is equipped with an SSD. You can then use your PC normally, with a brand new Windows 10!
