PGW: Mario Flash Test + The Rabbids Sparks of Hope, the game of the year on Switch?

We haven’t been able to test yet. Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope and it is now done thanks to the presence of the game at Paris Games Week. This Ubisoft game, exclusive to Nintendo Switch, is one of the big hits present at PGW Restart. The perfect opportunity for us to dive back into this very special turn-based strategy game. The first opus knew seduce us in 2017. But what about this sequel? The answer with our live flash test from Paris Games Week!

Mario + The Rabbids Sparks of Hope: the best game of 2022 on Switch?

The first opus released in 2017 was a surprise in many respects: a Switch exclusive by Ubisoft, an improbable crossover between Rabbids and Mario, a very effective turn-based strategy game, … In short, the game was everything as surprising as excellent. From then on, we could hope/imagine a sequel, especially since this video game UFO met with equally critical and commercial success. And then, in 2021, Ubisoft and Nintendo told us the following baptized: Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope. Relatively discreet, this sequel was unveiled over the months in 2022 before being released a few days ago, on October 20.

At Paris Games Week 2022, many terminals were logically dedicated to Sparks of Hope. The opportunity was too good not to jump on it and finally discover this sequel. Here, the story and the gameplay are renewed thanks to the Sparks, small star-shaped creatures that are the result of the fusion between the Raving Rabbids and the Lumas. A dark entity is attacking these cute little beasts and it’s up to Mario and his friends to do everything to save them!

What strikes from the first seconds of play is the freedom of action, much more important than in the first opus. Thus, we can walk in a small park while waiting to launch the first mission of the title. But it’s really during the first fight that the freedom offered by Saprks of Hope is revealed. Unlike an Xcom or the first opus, movement is completely free. It looks like a classic third-person action/adventure game. However, it is always a question of positioning yourself, preparing your attacks, covering yourself and then passing on the turn of the enemies. But all this is done in a more fluid and free way! There is still a limited action zone but within it, movement is completely free! It is very impressive ! With Mario + The Rabbids Sparks of Hope Ubisoft is not far from revolutionizing the turn-based strategy game. The Sparks add even more freedom, movement and action. Like weapons or special abilities, Sparks can be used once per turn to move to places inaccessible on foot or perform a specific action.

All this revitalizes the gameplay and allows this sequel to be approached really differently from the first opus. The levels also take advantage of this “new gameplay” to be redesigned and very different from what we saw in the previous game. Thus, we are not faced with a vulgar sequel which is content to offer the same recipe with a few additional ingredients. The Ubisoft Milan and Ubisoft Paris teams have done considerable work and offer us a truly excellent title! To be seen over time, but in any case the title was so captivating that we had to take the controller out of our hands!

Graphically speaking, Mario + The Rabbids Sparks of Hope is also evolving. The first opus was already very nice and the sequel refines everything. The sets seen during our game sessions seem larger, finer and more detailed. Ditto for characters and weapons.

Mario + The Rabbids Sparks of Hope seduced us immediately during our game sessions at Paris Games Week. It is undeniable that this title is one of the hits of this end of the year. And if it was even the excluded Switch of 2022? Possible ! Either way, it’s a must have. And this, whether you are a fan of strategy games, Mario or Rabbids. The humor of the Rabbits combined with the universe of Mario works admirably well on this second opus. Ubisoft has won its bet with this sequel on track to be even better than the first part!
