Smartphones soon to be more powerful than PCs thanks to an unexpected company

The mobile chip market is moving very fast, delivering significant performance gains from one generation to the next. Today, an AntuTu benchmark reveals the impressive score of a new SoC intended for Android smartphones, but whose score has nothing to envy to that of certain computers.

The first benchmark of the SoC Dimensity 9200 has just been shared on the web. It displays an impressive score for a mobile chip, superior to that of the Apple M1 chip that equips certain iPads, Macs and MacBooks.

MediaTek in the big leagues

For years, only the lowest performing Android smartphones and tablets were equipped with MediaTek chips. The interest for manufacturers was to offer sufficient performance for basic use while making significant savings compared to competing SoCs.

Today, the Taiwanese semiconductor company demonstrates its know-how in the design of high-end chips capable of delivering impressive performance. This is for example the case of the Dimensity 9000+ chip of the ROG Phone 6D Ultimate which currently occupies the first place in the ranking of Android smartphones on the AnTuTu benchmark.

Two weeks before the official presentation of the Snapdragon 8 Gen2, Qualcomm’s next high-end SoC, MediaTek could overshadow its competitor by presenting its new Dimensity 9200 chip engraved 4 nm. The latter makes its first appearance on AnTuTu with an impressive score of 1,266,102 points.

For comparison, last year’s Dimensity 9000 was the first SoC to break the symbolic one million mark on AnTuTu. It was later replaced this year by the Dimensity 9000+ which has more raw power than the Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 as you can see from the ranking above.

New chip, new dimension

It is on the social network Weibo that the first AnTuTu benchmark of the Dimensity 9200 chip would have been shared. We see an overall score of 1,266,102 points, 10% higher than Dimensity 9000+. But the most flattering comparison is undoubtedly to be made with that of Apple’s M1 chip. The latter, which equips certain iPad Pros, a MacBook Air and the Mac Mini, displays a score of 1,251,547 (2021 12.9-inch iPad Pro).

The benchmarks of Apple’s M2 chips and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 should of course reshuffle the cards. But the theoretical performance of the MediaTek Dimensity 9200 is further proof of the relevance of the ARM architecture, which today offers our smartphones, tablets and PCs excellent performance while benefiting from very good energy efficiency.

We can see on the supposed benchmark of the Dimensity 9200 that the temperature of the device used did not rise above 37 degrees. A controlled level of heating that suggests stable performance in resource-intensive applications such as video games.
