Tunisian Ons Jabeur lost in the final of the US Open on Saturday against Poland’s Iga Sviatek who won her second Grand Slam title of the year after Roland-Garros.
IgaSwiatek, already a double winner on clay at Roland-Garros, extended her domination on hard courts by winning her first US Open on Saturday to consolidate her place as world No.1 which she had inherited in March after the surprise departure of Ashleigh Barty .
The Polish got a first match point at 6-5, then a second at 6 points at 5 in the tie break which she converted this time by benefiting from an unforced error from Jabeur, the 33rd and last of the part.
Jabeur, who will be world number two from Monday, said she would take a few days off before analyzing what happened in the final against Swiatek, an opponent who, according to the Tunisian, “played better at good times“.
She also warned that she will start next season determined to reach the top spot in the world rankings.
In the Tunisian capital, citizens gathered in cafes to follow the American tournament recognize the effort provided by their compatriot, remaining resolutely positive for the future.
“She made a great effort, we encourage her because she has reached a very good level, she represents a free Tunisia and always forward“_ declares_ Amna Haj Ali.
“She represents Tunisia and all Arabs, and we have the honor that she is a Tunisian athlete. It’s not the end of the world to lose on the last day, maybe she will take advantage of this loss for her future successes. I watched the game and she was wearing the colors of the Tunisian flag and I wish her success” adds Belhassen Ben Joud, resident of Tunis
Ons Jabeur acknowledged that he will be “hardto accept defeat but stressed that she will continue to fight to be crowned with a “Grand Slam”.
