The Gabonese Constitutional Court “noted Thursday, January 5, the end of the powers of the current office of the Gabonese Center for Elections, following the non-renewal of the latter within the time limits set” by law, indicated to Anadolu, Friday, Etienne Franky Meba, vice-president of the Reappropriation of Gabon, of its Independence for its Reconstruction (Réagir), opposition party having filed a complaint with the Court against the CGE.

According to the decision of the Constitutional Court of Gabon, four members of the dissolved office of the CGE must take care of current affairs while waiting for the establishment of a new office.

“The renewal of the office of the Gabonese Election Center must take place within thirty days of notification of this decision,” the Court underlined in its decision.

According to the vice-president of the “Réagir” party, “this favorable echo” was obtained following the request submitted on January 3 by this opposition party “for the purpose of dissolving the office of the CGE”.

As a reminder, the Gabonese Election Center chaired by Moïse Bibalou Koumba, was set up in April 2018 for a two-year term. In June 2020, the office of Moïse Bibalou Koumba had exceptionally benefited from an extension of his mandate.

The office of the Gabonese Elections Center is made up of five members of the ruling majority and five members of the opposition. The material and administrative organization of elections in Gabon is the responsibility of this entirely political body.

To be part of the CGE, candidates must be at least 45 years old and at least 10 years of experience in senior public administration or in positions of responsibility in the private sector. They must also demonstrate proven experience in managing electoral processes.

The new office of the CGE, which must be set up in the coming days, will be responsible for organizing the next presidential election in 2023, the date of which will be up to it to set.
