Xavi didn’t like referee Mateu Lahoz’s behavior during the Barcelona derby.
The derby between FC Barcelona and Espanyol de Barcelona played this Saturday, December 31, 2022 will go down in history. Not for its final result (1-1) but for the number of yellow cards and red cards distributed.
A festival of yellow cards and red cards
The referee of the meeting, Mr. Antonio Mateu Lahoz had a very heavy hand with no less than twelve yellow cards but also two red cards addressed to JordI Alba (78th) and Vinicius Souza (80th).
After the match, Xavi, the FC Barcelona coach, regretted the behavior of the referee: “I think Mateu is a referee who controls his games, but today the game got away from him, in my opinion. He completely lost control. He talks to you, he communicates, he gives the impression that he manages, but today, that was not the case. I’m not blaming him, it’s all our fault. We slowed down after the first half. We are angry with ourselves. A draw at home against Espanyol when we dominated… Yes, you end up angry, because it’s unfair compared to what you showed, and what the opponent showed. But sometimes in football you are better but you don’t win. »
“The draw is our fault. We can talk about the referee, about many things, but in the end, the draw is because of our mistakes. We had an excellent half hour, but when you let so many chances pass… These are games that you have to kill beforeant,” Xavi added.
A bad operation in the classification for Barça
Because of this draw, combined with Real Madrid’s victory against Valladolid, Barça is no longer the only leader in La Liga.
The two great rivals of Spanish football have 38 points. Barça nevertheless remain leaders thanks to a better goal difference.
On the next day, January 8, 2023, Barça will be away on the lawn of Atlético de Madrid (kick-off at 9:00 p.m.). And before this clash, Xavi’s team will play their round of 16 Copa del Rey against CF Intercity (Wednesday January 4 at 9:00 p.m.).
