World Cup 2022: Senegal roars, Qatar eliminated

Senegal, finally effective offensively, offered Africa its first victory (3-1) at the 2022 World Cup on Friday, while Qatar, more playful than at the opening but still weighed down by its many individual errors, is eliminated.

Dominated late in the first match by the Netherlands, the next opponent of the host country, the Lions are thus reviving with a view to a ticket in the round of 16 which they will seek to obtain on Tuesday against Ecuador.

In the Al-Thumama stadium in Doha, far from being full at kick-off, reigning Asian champions Qatar took another step towards elimination, finally confirmed by the draw between Ecuador and the Netherlands in the other Group A game (1-1).

The Emirate become only the second host country to leave the group stage. It is even worse than South Africa, which had waited for its third match in 2010 to ratify its elimination.

If the “Annabi” find themselves there, they owe it largely to the many technical errors they still made throughout the game.

The palm of the day goes to the defender born in Algeria Boualem Khoukhi who, by completely missing his release, allowed Boulaye Dia to shoot his guardian Barsham (41st).

A scenario hard to swallow for Qatar who, despite the technical and physical domination of Senegal, then seemed more liberated than against Ecuador and could even have obtained a penalty first. This would have required the referee to consider the clumsy charge in the back of the attacker illegal Ismaila Sarr on Akram Afif (34th).

Qatar saves honor

Once in front, Senegal felt more at ease to answer the doubts born from their inoffensive attack against the Oranje. First thanks to a beautiful uncrossed head of Famara Diedhiou after a corner (48th) then by a dry strike from Bamba Dieng (84th).

But unlike the first match, Qatar did not disunite and, after two excellent parades ofEdouard Mendy (63rd, 67th), much more in legs than against the Dutch, the naturalized Ghanaian Mohammad Muntari (78th) ended up saving the honor, with a powerful header. This first goal in the World Cup for Qatar rewards a more balanced performance and has the value of encouragement.

After curling the ridiculous Sunday, the local selection can rejoice to have succeeded in presenting a face more in line with expectations. By remaining this time until stoppage time when they had quickly deserted the stands against Ecuador, his supporters were not mistaken.

Opposite, the African champion, who conceded at least one goal for the ninth time in a row in the World Cup, will not always be able to count on such a generous welcome and will have to continue to raise his level if he wants to last.
