With Windows, several key combinations allow you to perform a specific action. Called shortcuts, they are designed to save you time when performing certain operations.
Inadvertently, you may have used a shortcut designed to change the input language on your computer. For your information, French and English are the two input languages ​​configured by default on your PC. It each corresponds to a type of keyboard: AZERTY for French (FRA) and QWERTY for English (ENG).
Using Windows keyboard shortcuts, you can quickly switch from a QWERTY to AZERTY keyboard and vice versa. However, the key combinations used differ depending on the operating system version:

  • In Windows 7, 8 and 10: Shift + Alt Where Alt + Shift

First press the first key, keep it pressed, then briefly press the second key.
If input languages ​​other than French and English exist on your computer, repeat the same shortcut until you find the correct configuration.

Language preference settings

Keyboard shortcuts didn’t work? Do not panic, there are other ways to return to an AZERTY keyboard. This time, you have to go through the language preferences settings. There are two ways to access it:
Via the taskbar:
• At the bottom right of your computer screen, just next to the date and time, you will find a language icon.
• Click on the icon, this will bring up the list of available input languages.
• Choose ENG (French) to find the QWERTY layout of your keyboard.

Via Windows Settings:
• Click on the windows button on the lower left corner of the screen.
• In the menu that appears, press the toothed wheel which represents the Settings. A window will open to display all Windows settings.
• Select Time and language then click Region and language.
• In the Language > Keyboard section, select French.
• Click on Set as default language.

Change a QWERTY keyboard to AZERTY on macOS

The exercise is not more complicated under macOS. Here’s how to do it, step by step:
• Click on the menu Apple in the upper left corner of your screen.
• In the drop-down menu that appears, click on System Preferences.
• In the window that opens, select Keyboardthen click the tab Input method.
• On the left is a white frame with the list of installed keyboards, find Azerty then select it.
• You have found the Azerty system, you can exit.
