Xbox is part sectors that are doing well at Microsoft. “Thanks to Xbox Game Pass” and console sales based on financial results details.

Microsoft can probably say thank you to Sony who decided to increase the price of its PlayStation 5 by 50 euros during the summer, making the Xbox Series S and X-Series even cheaper in comparison.

This period, however, is expected to end in 2023 with price increases from Microsoft.

Let the end of year celebrations pass

It is Phil Spencer, the boss of Microsoft Gaming, who mentions it in an interview with the wall street journal.

We have maintained the price of our console, we have maintained the price of games… and our subscription. I don’t think we can do this forever. I think at some point we will have to raise prices on some things…

It may sound like a no-brainer, Microsoft won’t be able to maintain its prices forever. At one time or another, he will have to follow the evolution of the market and inflation. The firm had notably kept the price of games at 70 euros from 2020 when Sony decided to market its big titles at 80 euros since the start of the generation.

Note that it does not specify the subscription, the console, or the price of the games, which are exactly the products which will see their price increase.

In another sentence, Phil Spencer clarifies the timeline a bit more.

I think that at some point or another we will have to increase the prices of certain products, but with the end of the year approaching, we thought it was important to maintain the prices.

In other words, Microsoft wants to keep its competitive edge for the biggest sales period of the year. In 2023, after the end of year celebrations, we can expect a general increase in prices. First in line: the price of Xbox Game Pass which has never changed since its launch.

It’s also a way for Phil Spencer to create a sense of scarcity and urgency as the holidays approach. It kind of pushes you to buy now if you want to avoid a rise. The investment in three years of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate at half price for example, to avoid an increase in the subscription.

Anyway, things are now clear. Microsoft also should push a price increase, despite the excellent finances of the group.
